Baccarat in 60 seconds
Baccarat is the king of live casino in Asia, and for good reason: it’s simple, it’s fast, and the odds are among the best on the casino floor. Two hands are dealt, Player and Banker, and you bet on which one ends up closest to 9. You can also bet on a Tie.
That’s really it. You don’t make any decisions after betting, no hit or stand like blackjack. The dealer follows fixed rules for drawing cards, so a first-timer and a 30-year veteran uncle get exactly the same odds. Paiseh to say, but all that “feel” at the table doesn’t change anything one.
The three main bets:
- Banker: pays 0.95 to 1 (5% commission). Lowest house edge.
- Player: pays 1 to 1. Slightly worse.
- Tie: pays 8 to 1. Looks shiok, but the worst main bet by far.
If the hand ties and you bet Banker or Player, your bet is simply returned. No win, no lose.
Card values and naturals
| Card | Value |
|---|---|
| Ace | 1 |
| 2 to 9 | Face value |
| 10, J, Q, K | 0 |
If a hand adds up to 10 or more, only the last digit counts. So:
- 7 + 6 = 13 → 3
- K + 9 = 9 (the best total)
- 5 + 5 = 10 → 0 (called “baccarat”, the worst total)
- 8 + 8 + 4 = 20 → 0
The highest possible total is 9, so you can never “bust” like in blackjack. A two-card total of 8 or 9 is a natural. If either hand gets a natural, both hands stand immediately and the round is over. No more cards, finish already.
The third-card rules
The dealer handles all this automatically, so you don’t need to memorise it leh. But knowing the rules helps you follow a live squeeze and stops you from thinking the dealer anyhow draw, ok?
Player’s rule (applies first)
| Player’s first two cards | Player does |
|---|---|
| 0–5 | Draws a third card |
| 6–7 | Stands |
| 8–9 | Natural, both hands stand |
Banker’s rule
If Player stood on 6 or 7, Banker uses the simple version: draw on 0–5, stand on 6–7.
If Player drew a third card, Banker’s move depends on its own total and Player’s third card:
| Banker’s total | Banker draws if Player’s third card is | Banker stands if Player’s third card is |
|---|---|---|
| 0, 1, 2 | Any card | — |
| 3 | Anything except 8 | 8 |
| 4 | 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 | 0, 1, 8, 9 |
| 5 | 4, 5, 6, 7 | 0, 1, 2, 3, 8, 9 |
| 6 | 6, 7 | 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9 |
| 7 | — | Always stands |
Worked hand
- Player: 2 + 3 = 5, so Player draws. The third card is a 4, making 9.
- Banker: J + 4 = 4. Player’s third card was a 4, and Banker on 4 draws on 2–7, so Banker draws. It gets a 3, making 7.
- Result: Player 9 beats Banker 7. Player bets win 1:1.
Another one: Player shows 6 and stands. Banker has 5. Since Player stood, Banker draws on 0–5, so Banker takes a third card. Simple once you see it a few times lor.
Payouts, odds and house edge
Here’s the full picture for standard 8-deck baccarat:
| Bet | Pays | Wins about | House edge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Banker | 0.95 to 1 | 45.86% | 1.06% |
| Player | 1 to 1 | 44.62% | 1.24% |
| Tie (8:1) | 8 to 1 | 9.52% | 14.36% |
| Tie (9:1, where offered) | 9 to 1 | 9.52% | 4.84% |
| Player Pair / Banker Pair | 11 to 1 | — | 10.36% |
| Banker in no-commission / Super 6 (a 6 pays 1:2) | 1 to 1 | — | ≈1.46% |
Worked example: 100 hands at S$10
You play 100 hands at S$10, so S$1,000 in total bets. Average loss by bet type:
- Banker: S$1,000 × 1.06% = S$10.60
- Player: S$1,000 × 1.24% = S$12.40
- Pair side bet: S$1,000 × 10.36% = S$103.60
- Tie: S$1,000 × 14.36% = S$143.60
Banker costs you about a plate of chicken rice and a kopi per 100 hands. Tie costs you a nice dinner for two. Same game, same time spent, damn big difference sia.
How commission works: bet S$100 on Banker and win, you get S$95 profit plus your S$100 back. Some tables track the commission and collect it later, but it’s the same 5%. On a Super 6 table there’s no commission, but if Banker wins with a total of 6, a S$10 bet pays only S$5. That rule pushes the edge to about 1.46%, so standard Banker is still the better deal.
SEA favourites: Speed, Squeeze, No Commission, Lightning and Dragon Tiger
Speed Baccarat
Same rules, much faster rounds. More hands per hour means more fun, but also more bets per hour, so your hourly cost goes up even though the edge doesn’t. me88 runs its own exclusive Speed Baccarat table at Pragmatic Play Live, with first-bet insurance on top.
Squeeze Baccarat
The cards get revealed slowly, peeled from the corner, so you see the dots one side at a time. Pure drama, same odds. Very popular with Asian players who like the “huat ah!” moment when the third pip appears.
No Commission and Super 6
No 5% fee on Banker wins, but a Banker win on 6 pays half. Edge about 1.46%. Fine if you hate counting commission, slightly worse value.
Lightning Baccarat (Evolution)
Every bet carries a 20% Lightning fee (a S$10 bet costs S$12), and random Lightning Cards boost wins with multipliers. Player’s RTP is about 98.76%. Fun lah, but you pay extra for the fireworks.
Dragon Tiger
The fast cousin of baccarat: one card each to Dragon and Tiger, highest card wins, and Dragon or Tiger pays 1:1. When the two cards tie, you lose half your Dragon or Tiger bet. That half-loss gives a house edge of about 3.73%, more than three times Banker’s 1.06%. Simple and fast, but the odds are worse leh.

Reading the roadmaps
Every live baccarat table shows a scoreboard of past hands, the roadmaps. Singaporean players love studying them, so here’s how to read them properly:
- Bead Plate: every hand in order, filled column by column. Red usually means Banker, blue Player, green Tie. The simplest record.
- Big Road: the main one. A new column starts every time the winner changes, so a long column means a streak (“long dragon”). Ties show as a green slash on the last result.
- Big Eye Boy, Small Road, Cockroach Pig: the derived roads. They don’t show who won; they compare the shape of the Big Road’s columns. Red means the pattern is repeating, blue means it’s choppy. Each road looks a bit further back.
But hor, honest truth: roadmaps describe the past, they don’t predict the future. A shoe that’s shown eight Bankers in a row is not “due” a Player. The cards dealt earlier change the odds only by tiny fractions, nothing you can use. Follow the roads for fun, can. Bet the house on them, cannot lah.
Betting systems: Martingale, Paroli and 1-3-2-6
Martingale (double after every loss)
| Hand | Bet | Total lost if this hand loses too |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | S$10 | S$10 |
| 2 | S$20 | S$30 |
| 3 | S$40 | S$70 |
| 4 | S$80 | S$150 |
| 5 | S$160 | S$310 |
| 6 | S$320 | S$630 |
| 7 | S$640 | S$1,270 |
A win at any step gets back everything plus S$10 (a bit less on Banker, because of commission). Sounds shiok, until the streak comes. Ignoring ties, Banker loses six hands in a row about 1.4% of the time, roughly once every 70 tries, and in a long evening you’ll have many tries. If the table max is S$500, you can’t even place the S$640 bet. S$630 gone to chase S$10. Walao.
Paroli (double after every win)
The reverse: start at S$10, double after a win, and reset after three wins in a row or any loss. Three wins in a row turns S$10 into +S$70 (10 + 20 + 40); a loss only costs your S$10 base. Gentler on the wallet, but it doesn’t change the edge either.
1-3-2-6
Bet 1 unit, then 3, then 2, then 6 as long as you keep winning, then reset. With S$10 units: S$10, S$30, S$20, S$60. A full run of four wins makes +S$120. Lose the second bet and you’re down S$20 for that cycle.
The bottom line on systems: none of them change the house edge. Your average loss is always total bets × edge. Systems just rearrange when you win and lose. Pick one for fun if you want, but set a hard limit, don’t let the system set it for you.
Strategy that actually works (and table etiquette)
The winning strategy is boring, but it’s the real one:
- Bet Banker most of the time. Lowest edge on the table.
- Skip Tie and pair side bets. 14.36% and 10.36% edges, no thanks.
- Set a session budget and a bet size of about 2–5% of it. With S$200, that’s S$5–10 per hand.
- Set a stop-win too. Doubled your money? Bank half and stop. You’ll thank yourself later.
- Watch the pace. Speed tables mean more hands per hour, so smaller bets.
- Collect your rebate. On live baccarat, the rebate is your best friend (more below).
Sample session plan: S$200 on live baccarat
| Step | What you do |
|---|---|
| Budget | S$200 for tonight, transferred to the live casino wallet. That’s all. |
| Bet size | S$10 on Banker (5% of the budget) |
| Stop-loss | Balance hits S$0, or 60 hands played, whichever comes first |
| Stop-win | Balance reaches S$300? Withdraw S$100, keep playing with the rest |
| Average cost | 60 hands × S$10 × 1.06% ≈ S$6.36, before your rebate |
Sixty hands at a normal table is roughly an hour of play. The average cost is less than a movie ticket, and the stop-win means a good night stays a good night. Steady lah.
Common baccarat mistakes
- Betting Tie because it’s “due”. Tie can be “due” meh? No such thing. The edge is 14.36% every single hand.
- Chasing a long dragon with bigger bets. Streaks end when they end, not when you double up.
- Being kiasu with pair bets. 11:1 sounds nice, but 10.36% is jialat.
- Playing Speed Baccarat at normal bet sizes. More hands per hour means more cost per hour lor.
- Forgetting to claim the rebate. At Maxim88 and me88 it’s no-turnover money. Don’t waste.
Squeeze and chat etiquette: on live squeeze tables, the dealer does the squeezing on camera, so just enjoy the show. In the chat, keep it friendly: no spamming, no scolding the dealer when the cards are suay, no begging other players for tips. A “huat ah!” when Banker wins is fine lah, everybody does it.
Baccarat bonuses: why rebates beat welcome offers
Most welcome bonuses count slots only, so baccarat bets don’t clear them (our wagering guide explains why). For baccarat players, the value is in live-specific offers and rebates:
| Casino | What baccarat players get |
|---|---|
| Maxim88 | Instant rebate 0.3–0.8% on live baccarat and roulette, no turnover · 50% live welcome up to S$200 (25x) · daily 10% live reload up to S$100 (12x) · exclusive Evolution baccarat table · weekly Evolution Lucky Draw worth S$46,264 |
| me88 | Live baccarat rebate 0.3% to 1.2% by VIP tier, unlimited, no turnover · 100% insurance up to S$300 (7x) on its exclusive Pragmatic Play Speed Baccarat |
| GOD55 | 100% live casino welcome up to S$200 (30x) · daily 10% live casino bonus up to S$100 (8x) |
| DK88 | 20 live studios · 38% live casino deposit bonus in the King’s Market (50 Dash Coins) · daily rebate up to 1.5%, no wagering |
Worked example: what a rebate is worth
Say you bet S$10,000 on Banker over a month (1,000 hands at S$10). Average loss at 1.06% = S$106.
- A 0.3% rebate pays back S$30, so your average cost drops to S$76.
- A 0.8% rebate (Maxim88’s top live rate) pays back S$80, so the cost drops to about S$26.
- me88’s top live baccarat rebate of 1.2% would pay S$120, more than the Banker edge on paper.
That’s why regular baccarat players chase VIP tiers instead of welcome bonuses. The rebate eats into the house edge on every single hand, no turnover, no fuss. Your kakis still taking slots bonuses for baccarat? Share this with them hor, later they say bo jio.
Maxim88 adds some fun extras for Evolution fans too: Baccarat 8 Loss 9 pays 100% cashback up to S$1,288 when your Natural 8 loses to a Natural 9 (min bet S$500), and Baccarat 8 Lucky Streak pays S$188 to S$1,888 for eight wins in a row. Every S$100 of Evolution turnover also earns a ticket for the Monday Lucky Draw.
Durian tip: Before you sit down, check the casino’s rebate table for live baccarat specifically, not just “up to” headline numbers. The live rate is often lower than the slots rate, and that’s the one that matters for you.
