What wagering actually means
A casino bonus isn’t free cash. It’s credit that turns into withdrawable money only after you’ve bet a set amount, and that amount is the wagering requirement. You’ll also see it called playthrough, rollover or, on almost every Malaysian and Singaporean site, turnover. Same rule, four names.
The whole idea fits in one line: a 35x bonus means your total bets must reach 35 times a base amount before the bonus, and anything you win with it, becomes cash. Every bet counts at its full stake, win or lose. Spin 100 times at $1 and you’ve generated $100 of turnover, even if your balance barely moved.
Two numbers decide how hard a bonus is to clear:
- The multiplier: 15x, 25x, 35x and so on.
- What it multiplies: the bonus alone, or your deposit plus the bonus.
Most players only look at the first. The second matters just as much, and it’s where many Southeast Asian casinos quietly double the workload.
Durian tip: Turnover isn’t money lost. It’s the sum of every bet, including winnings you bet again. A $200 balance can easily generate $5,000 of turnover in a few sessions.
Bonus-only vs deposit + bonus: the number that changes everything
Take the most common offer there is, a 100% match. You deposit $100, the casino adds $100, and the terms say 25x.
- If the 25x applies to the bonus only: $100 × 25 = $2,500 of bets.
- If it applies to deposit + bonus: ($100 + $100) × 25 = $5,000 of bets.
Same headline, double the work. On a 100% match, 25x deposit + bonus is really 50x the bonus.
| 100% match, $100 deposit, 25x | Bonus only | Deposit + bonus |
|---|---|---|
| Amount the 25x applies to | $100 | $200 |
| Turnover needed | $2,500 | $5,000 |
| Same as, on the bonus alone | 25x | 50x |
| Spins needed at $1 a spin | 2,500 | 5,000 |
| Expected cost on a 96% RTP slot | about $100 | about $200 |
The bigger the match percentage, the less the deposit inflates the total, which is why 255% and 288% offers look reasonable at first glance. To compare any two offers fairly, convert them to the bonus-only basis:
Bonus-equivalent multiplier = multiplier × (deposit + bonus) ÷ bonus
Worked example: a 288% match at 35x deposit + bonus
You deposit $100 and get a 288% bonus of $288. The terms say 35x deposit + bonus.
- Base amount: $100 + $288 = $388.
- Turnover: $388 × 35 = $13,580.
- Bonus-equivalent: $13,580 ÷ $288 = 47.2x the bonus.
So “35x” on a 288% match is really about 47x. That’s exactly how the me88 welcome bonus works, and it’s why every review we publish lists the wagering on the bonus basis too, so you can compare offers like for like.
Game contribution: not every bet counts the same
Casinos weight games by how much of each bet counts toward turnover. A slot spin usually counts in full. A baccarat hand often counts for little or nothing, because low-edge games would let players clear bonuses too cheaply.
| Game type | Typical contribution | What counts from a $100 bet |
|---|---|---|
| Slots | 100% | $100 |
| Fishing and arcade games | 0–100% | Varies (Maxim88’s 288% counts fishing in full) |
| Live baccarat, roulette, blackjack | 0–20% | $0–20 |
| RNG table games and video poker | 0–10% | $0–10 |
| Sportsbook | 100% above a minimum odds line | $0 if the odds are below the line |
| Bonus buys, jackpots, “low-risk” bets | Often 0% or banned | Can void the bonus |
These are typical figures. Always check the T&Cs, because every casino writes its own list. Some real examples from our reviews:
- UWIN33 doesn’t count draws, betting both sides, roulette bets covering 24 or more numbers, sports odds below 1.50, poker, RNG table games or 4D.
- Winna’s VIP Match bonus counts its in-house Originals and any game with 98–99.1% RTP at 25%, and games above 99.1% RTP at just 10%. That’s game weighting in action: the lower the house edge, the less each bet counts.
- Almost every welcome bonus we’ve reviewed is slots only.
The practical upshot: if live baccarat is your game, a slots welcome bonus is the wrong tool. Use live casino offers and rebates instead. Our baccarat guide compares the best ones.
The fine print that voids bonuses
The multiplier gets the headline. These rules decide whether you actually get paid.
Max bet
Most bonus terms cap your stake while wagering is active, often at around $5 a spin or a set share of the bonus. Go over it once and the casino can void the bonus and its winnings. Ante Bet and bonus buys raise your effective stake, so they count too.
Time limits
You get a window to finish: 3 days at DK88, 7 days on BK8’s slots welcome, 30 days at GOD55, me88, MD88, Maxim88, AW8 and Megapari. If the turnover isn’t done by the deadline, the bonus is removed. Short windows suit players who’ll play a lot straight away. If you play a little each evening, a 30-day window is friendlier.
Max cashout and win caps
Some bonuses limit what you can withdraw from them:
- DK88 lets bonus winnings cash out up to 5× the bonus.
- UWIN33’s RM10 free credit pays one withdrawal of RM50–100, and anything above that is forfeited.
- MD88’s live casino welcome caps cashouts at RM2,000.
- GOD55 has a daily win cap of RM30,000 / SGD 3,000 for entry-level members.
Excluded games
“Slots” rarely means every slot. Maxim88 excludes PlayAce, Mega888 and 918Kiss from its 288% bonus. me88 excludes 918Kiss, Mega888, Spadegaming, Relax Gaming and V-Power. GOD55 (Malaysia) excludes Playtech, Gemini, Microslot, CP Games, 918Kiss, Mega888 and Pussy888. MD88 excludes Playtech, Asia Gaming, Relax, Habanero, Lucky365, BNG, 918Kiss, Mega888 and Pussy888. Bets on excluded games don’t count, and at some casinos they can void the bonus.
Love Mega888 and 918Kiss? Take the dedicated offers instead: me88’s Mega & Kiss 120%, Maxim88’s 100% Mega888 / 918Kiss bonus or GOD55’s 100% Mega888 / 918Kiss welcome. These often use a winover target (see the glossary below).
Sticky vs non-sticky
- Non-sticky bonuses keep your cash and bonus separate. You play your own money first, and the bonus only kicks in if the cash runs out. Win big early and you can often withdraw and walk away from the bonus.
- Sticky bonuses merge into your balance. The bonus itself can never be withdrawn, only the winnings above it once wagering is done.
DK88 and UWIN33 both state that your real money is used before bonus funds. If you hit early, ask support whether you can cash out the real-money win and drop the bonus.
Rebates, cashback and free credit: the low-wagering money
Welcome bonuses grab the attention, but the best everyday value in Southeast Asian casinos often comes from offers with little or no turnover:
| Offer type | How it works | Typical turnover | Real examples from our reviews |
|---|---|---|---|
| Instant or daily rebate | A % of every bet back, win or lose | 0–1x | me88 up to 1.2%, Maxim88 up to 1% hourly, DK88 up to 1.5% daily (all no turnover); MD88 up to 1%, withdrawable straight away in Malaysia |
| Weekly cashback | A % of net losses back | 1x–10x | UWIN33 5% up to RM1,688 (10x the bonus); MD88 5% up to RM1,288 at Bronze (10x) |
| Free credit and no-deposit spins | Small credit or spins for signing up or verifying | 0–5x, with a cashout cap | DK88: 38 free spins, no wagering; UWIN33: RM10 at 5x, cashout RM50–100 |
Rebate maths is simple and powerful. Turn over $5,000 in a month at a 1.2% no-turnover rebate and you get $60 back, no strings. A rebate doesn’t change the odds of any single bet, but it shaves the house edge on everything you play: a 96% RTP slot with a 1% rebate plays like a 97% slot.
One catch: some casinos pause rebates while a bonus is active (GOD55 does), so a welcome bonus can cost you rebate money as well as turnover. Factor that in.
The real cost of clearing a bonus
Here’s the formula casinos don’t put on the banner:
Expected cost of clearing = turnover × house edge
The house edge is 100% minus the game’s RTP. A 96% RTP slot has a 4% edge, so on average it keeps $4 of every $100 bet. Wager $5,000 on it and the expected loss is $5,000 × 4% = $200.
A bonus is worth roughly its face value minus that expected cost:
- $100 bonus at 25x the bonus: $2,500 of turnover costs about $100. You’re close to break-even on average, with a free shot at a big win.
- $100 bonus at 25x deposit + bonus: $5,000 of turnover costs about $200. On average you hand back the whole bonus plus $100 of your own deposit.
Choose a higher-RTP game and the cost drops. Big Bass Bonanza runs at 96.71% by default, a 3.29% edge, so the same $2,500 costs about $82 instead of $100. Our RTP and RNG guide shows how to check which RTP version your casino runs.
These are averages across many players. Real sessions swing hard: some players land a 1,000x hit in the first hour, others bust before they finish. That swing is the fun of a bonus. The expected cost tells you how much you’re paying for the fun, and the lower it is, the more of the bonus you keep.

How to pick:
- You want to clear it and cash out: DK88’s 25x-the-bonus package, UWIN33’s slots option, Maxim88’s 100% slots welcome or BK8’s 100% welcome (12x deposit + bonus). DK88 gives you only 3 days, so claim it when you have time to play.
- You want the biggest balance and the most playtime: the 288% and 255% matches at me88, MD88 and GOD55. The turnover is heavier, but a SGD/RM 100 deposit plays like 355–388.
- You play live baccarat: skip slots welcomes and take a live offer or a rebate.
- You play with crypto: Winna has no bonus to clear at all, just rakeback from your first bet.

How to clear a bonus: a step-by-step plan
- Convert to the bonus basis. Use the formula above. Anything above about 40x the bonus is a playtime bonus, not a cash-out bonus.
- Read five lines of the T&Cs: the basis, the max bet, the time limit, the eligible games and the max cashout.
- Claim it correctly. DK88 makes you pick the bonus on the sign-up screen. GOD55, me88 and Maxim88 make you pick it from the promo-code list when you transfer to a game wallet. Skip that step and there’s no bonus.
- Pick an eligible slot with a high RTP and low-to-medium volatility. Check the info screen for a 96%+ version. Steadier games are less likely to bust you before the finish line; our volatility guide explains why.
- Size your bet to the turnover. $2,500 of turnover is 5,000 spins at $0.50 or 1,000 spins at $2.50. Choose a stake that fits the time limit and stays under the max bet.
- Track your progress. Most casinos show turnover progress in the wallet or promotions page. Screenshot it as you go.
- Stay on eligible games. No excluded studios, no bonus buys and no betting both sides.
- Withdraw when you cross the line. Verify your account early so the payout isn’t held up. A fast local method helps; see our payments guide.
Common mistakes and a mini glossary
The errors we see most often:
- Reading 35x as bonus-only when it’s deposit + bonus.
- Claiming a slots bonus, then playing baccarat that counts 0%.
- Going over the max bet once, usually with Ante Bet switched on or a bonus buy.
- Letting a 3-day window lapse.
- Taking a slots welcome when you mainly play Mega888 or 918Kiss, which are excluded.
- Withdrawing a few hours before finishing and forfeiting the bonus.
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| Turnover / wagering / playthrough / rollover | The total you must bet before a bonus can be withdrawn |
| D+B | Deposit + bonus: the turnover multiplier applies to both |
| Game contribution | The % of each bet that counts toward turnover |
| Max bet | The highest stake allowed while a bonus is active |
| Max cashout | A cap on what you can withdraw from a bonus |
| Winover | A balance target instead of a betting target. $50 + $50 at 3x winover usually means your balance must reach $300 |
| Sticky bonus | The bonus itself can never be withdrawn, only winnings above it |
| Non-sticky bonus | Your cash is played first, and the bonus only applies if it runs out |
| Rebate / rakeback | A % of your turnover paid back, often with no wagering |
| Free credit | A small no-deposit balance with a low cashout cap |
Bonuses add entertainment value, but they’re not income. Set a budget before you claim one and stick to it, and if it ever stops being fun, our responsible gambling page can help.
