RTP and RNG Explained: How Slot Payouts Really Work (2026)

RTP and RNG explained: house edge maths, real RTPs for top slots and table games, RTP variants, testing labs, provably fair games and the myths to ignore.

CasinoDurian· Updated 1 Oct 2026· 11 min read

In short: RTP is the share of all bets a game pays back over millions of rounds, and the house edge is simply 100% minus RTP. The same slot can run at different RTPs at different casinos, so check the info screen before you spin. RNG software makes every result independent and is audited by labs like GLI and iTech Labs, which is why hot and cold machines don't exist.

Key takeaways

  • ✓House edge = 100% − RTP. A 96.5% slot keeps $3.50 of every $100 wagered over the long run.
  • ✓RTP is a long-run average across millions of spins, not a prediction for your session.
  • ✓Many slots come in several RTP versions. Book of Dead ranges from 96.21% down to 84.18%, so always check the paytable.
  • ✓Table games beat slots on RTP: blackjack with basic strategy is about 99.5% and baccarat's Banker bet 98.94%.
  • ✓Every spin is independent. Hot machines, due jackpots and night-time tightening are myths.
  • ✓Look for lab certificates (GLI, iTech Labs, BMM, eCOGRA) or provably fair games at crypto casinos like Winna.

What RTP means (and what it doesn’t)

RTP (return to player) is the percentage of all money wagered on a game that it pays back over the long run. A slot with a 96.50% RTP returns, on average, $96.50 for every $100 bet across millions of spins. The other $3.50 is the house edge:

House edge = 100% − RTP

That’s the most useful number in the casino, because it tells you the average price of your entertainment. Here’s how it plays out in real money.

Worked example: 1,000 spins at $1

You play Gates of Olympus 1000 (96.50% RTP) for 1,000 spins at $1.

  1. Total wagered: 1,000 × $1 = $1,000.
  2. Expected return: $1,000 × 96.50% = $965.
  3. Expected cost: $1,000 × 3.50% = $35.

That $35 is an average, not a forecast. One player finishes those 1,000 spins $400 down; another lands a 500x multiplier and walks away $450 up. RTP only settles in over a very large number of spins, far more than any one person plays. What it does tell you is which game costs less to play over time, and that’s worth knowing.

Where the RTP number comes from

RTP isn’t measured by watching players. It’s built into the game’s maths. The studio lists every possible outcome, from a dead spin to the max win, multiplies each payout by its probability and adds them up. A testing lab then checks that figure by simulating the game over hundreds of millions of rounds before it’s certified. That’s why the RTP printed in the rules is called the theoretical RTP: it’s what the maths guarantees in the long run, not what last week’s players happened to get.

It also means the RTP includes everything: base-game wins, free spins, multipliers and the rare max-win hit. A slot whose RTP leans heavily on a 15,000x top prize will feel stingier in a normal session than one that spreads its RTP across frequent small wins, even when both say 96.5%.

Durian tip: RTP measures the game, not your session. For “how bumpy will tonight be?”, look at volatility instead. Our slot volatility guide covers it.

These are the default RTPs from our Pragmatic Play and Play’n GO slot reviews, with the lower versions providers also supply. JILI’s Super Ace and Fortune Gems go higher, at 97%.

Slot Provider Default RTP Other versions House edge (default) Max win
Big Bass Bonanza Pragmatic Play 96.71% 95.67% / 94.62% 3.29% 2,100x
Sugar Rush 1000 Pragmatic Play 96.53% 95.50% / 94.50% 3.47% 25,000x
Gates of Olympus 1000 Pragmatic Play 96.50% 95.51% / 94.50% 3.50% 15,000x
Gates of Olympus Pragmatic Play 96.50% Check the paytable 3.50% 5,000x
Starlight Princess Pragmatic Play 96.50% Check the paytable 3.50% 5,000x
Sugar Rush Pragmatic Play 96.50% 95.50% / 94.50% 3.50% 5,000x
Sweet Bonanza Pragmatic Play 96.48% Check the paytable 3.52% about 21,100x
Book of Dead Play’n GO 96.21% 94.25% / 91.25% / 87.25% / 84.18% 3.79% 5,000x

Two things jump out. First, the big-name slots cluster tightly between 96.2% and 96.7% at default settings, so the default version of any of them is a fair game to play. Second, the “other versions” column is where the real differences hide.

RTP variants: the same slot, a different payback

Most big providers ship each game in several RTP versions, and the casino chooses which one to run. The reels, graphics and features look identical. Only the maths changes.

Book of Dead has the widest spread on our list. Here’s what 1,000 spins at $1 cost on each version:

Book of Dead version House edge Expected cost of $1,000 wagered
96.21% 3.79% $37.90
94.25% 5.75% $57.50
91.25% 8.75% $87.50
87.25% 12.75% $127.50
84.18% 15.82% $158.20

Same game, more than four times the cost. That’s why checking the RTP takes 20 seconds and is worth every one of them.

How to check a slot’s RTP, step by step

  1. Open the game at your casino (real-money mode or demo, if the casino offers one).
  2. Tap the menu or the info (i) button. On Pragmatic Play games it sits in the bottom bar; on Play’n GO games it’s in the game menu.
  3. Open the game rules or paytable and scroll down. Look for a line like “The theoretical RTP of this game is 96.50%”.
  4. Compare it with the default in the table above or in our slot review.
  5. If it’s lower, look elsewhere. Some casinos make this easy: GOD55 prints the RTP on every slot tile, and showed Gates of Olympus 1000 at 96.5% when we tested.

Durian tip: If a game offers Ante Bet or a bonus buy, the rules sometimes list a separate RTP for each mode. Check the one you’ll actually use.

Table game RTP: where the best odds live

Slots hover around 96%. Several table games do much better, and they’re the same in live casino as in a land-based one.

Game and bet RTP House edge Cost of $1,000 wagered
Blackjack with basic strategy about 99.5% about 0.5% about $5
Baccarat: Banker (5% commission) 98.94% 1.06% $10.60
Baccarat: Player 98.76% 1.24% $12.40
European roulette (single zero) 97.30% 2.70% $27.00
Sic Bo: Big or Small 97.22% 2.78% $27.80
Dragon Tiger: Dragon or Tiger 96.27% 3.73% $37.30
Typical Pragmatic Play slot 96.50% 3.50% $35.00
American roulette (double zero) 94.74% 5.26% $52.60
Baccarat: Tie (pays 8:1) 85.64% 14.36% $143.60

Notice the spread inside one game. Baccarat’s Banker bet is one of the best wagers in the casino, and the Tie bet on the very same table is one of the worst. Blackjack only hits 99.5% if you follow basic strategy; play by gut and you give back several times more. Our guides to baccarat and blackjack show you how to stay on the right side of those numbers.

Game shows and “Lightning” games

Live game shows sit closer to slots than to classic tables. Evolution’s Crazy Time returns up to 96.08% (on its best betting spot, less on the bonus-game spots), Monopoly Live up to 96.23% and Mega Ball roughly 95.05–95.40%, depending on how many cards you buy. Each bet spot on a money wheel has its own RTP, so the spot you choose matters.

The “Lightning” versions of table games add random multipliers on top of a real deal, paid for by a fee or by trimmed base payouts. Lightning Baccarat charges a 20% fee on each main bet in return for 1–5 Lightning Cards with 2x–8x multipliers, which nudges its main-bet RTP slightly below classic baccarat. You trade a little RTP for a much bigger ceiling. That’s fine as long as you know it’s the deal. Our live casino guide covers each game in more detail.

RTP vs hit frequency vs volatility

Three different numbers describe a slot, and players mix them up all the time.

Measure The question it answers Example from our reviews
RTP How much of every $100 wagered comes back in the long run? Big Bass Bonanza: 96.71%
Hit frequency How often does a spin pay anything at all? Big Bass Bonanza: about 13%. Sugar Rush 1000: about 34.48%
Volatility How lumpy are the wins: many small ones or a few huge ones? Sugar Rush 1000 can pay 25,000x; Big Bass Bonanza tops out at 2,100x

These numbers are independent. Sugar Rush 1000 pays something on roughly one spin in three, yet it’s still high volatility, because most of those hits are smaller than your stake and the real money sits in rare multiplier-packed free spins. Big Bass Bonanza pays on only about one spin in eight, yet it has the higher RTP. A “win” in hit-frequency terms can even be a loss: a $0.50 return on a $1 spin counts as a hit.

So use them together: RTP to pick the cheapest version, volatility to match your budget, and hit frequency to know how often you’ll see the reels light up.

How RNG works, and who checks it

Every slot spin and every card in an RNG table game comes from a random number generator: software that churns out unpredictable numbers continuously. The moment you press spin, the game takes the current numbers and maps them to reel positions. The outcome is fixed right then; the spinning animation is just the reveal.

A certified RNG has three properties that matter to you:

  • No memory. The game doesn’t know what happened on the last spin, or the last 500.
  • No pattern. Results can’t be predicted from previous results.
  • The paytable holds. Over millions of rounds, results match the published RTP.

RNG tables vs live tables

Baccarat, blackjack and roulette come in two flavours online. RNG versions are animated games where the software deals from a virtual shoe that’s typically reshuffled every round. Live versions use a real shoe, wheel or dice shaker in a studio, filmed in real time. With the same rules and payouts, the house edge is the same in both. The difference is pace: an RNG table can deal a hand every few seconds, so the same $10 bet costs you more per hour simply because you play more hands. Live tables are slower and more social, which is why most Southeast Asian players prefer them for baccarat.

The testing labs

Licensed game providers send their RNGs and game maths to independent labs before release. The names you’ll see in casino footers:

Lab What you’ll see
GLI (Gaming Laboratories International) One of the world’s biggest testing labs for games and RNGs
iTech Labs RNG and RTP certification for online casino games
BMM Testlabs The oldest private gaming lab, testing since 1981
eCOGRA Known for its “Safe and Fair” seal

Maxim88’s footer, for example, shows BMM Testlabs, iTech Labs and GLI badges. A real badge should click through to a certificate on the lab’s site. If it’s just an image, treat it as decoration.

Provably fair: checking results yourself

Crypto casinos add another layer for their in-house games, called provably fair:

  1. Before you bet, the casino commits to a secret server seed and shows you a scrambled (hashed) version of it.
  2. You set your own client seed, and a counter (the nonce) goes up by one with every bet.
  3. The result of each round is calculated from all three.
  4. When you change seeds, the casino reveals the old server seed. You can hash it to confirm it matches what you were shown, then recalculate every result.

The casino can’t change the outcome after seeing your bet, and you don’t have to take anyone’s word for it. Winna runs 16 provably fair Originals, including Baccarat, Blackjack, Dice, Mines, Plinko and Limbo, alongside 4,490+ slots from regular providers.

Myths that cost players money

“This machine is hot.” It isn’t. A slot that just paid a big win has exactly the same odds on the next spin. Online, thousands of players are spinning the same game at once, each with independent results.

“It hasn’t paid in ages, so it’s due.” There’s no “due”. A game that’s gone 300 spins without a bonus has the same chance of triggering it on spin 301 as on spin 1. Chasing a “due” bonus is how budgets disappear.

“Casinos tighten slots at night” or “they pay better in the morning.” A slot doesn’t know the time. The RTP version is a setting the casino picks from the provider’s certified versions. It isn’t a dial that turns with the clock, your losses or how long you’ve played.

“Autoplay pays less than manual spins.” Autoplay simply presses the button for you. Every spin uses the same RNG and paytable.

“Near misses mean a win is close.” Two scatters and a third just above the line is a reveal of a result that was already decided. It tells you nothing about the next spin.

“Bigger bets have a better RTP.” In standard slots the RTP is the same at every stake. Features like Ante Bet change your cost and your bonus chances, not the game’s fairness.

How to use RTP to choose where and what to play

  1. Pick a casino with the providers you want and a clear game library.
  2. Check the RTP version of your favourite slots in the info screen.
  3. Prefer the 96%+ version. If one casino runs Big Bass Bonanza at 96.71% and another at 94.62%, the first costs 3.29% of every bet instead of 5.38%: about 60% more playtime for the same money.
  4. Match volatility to your budget, using our volatility guide.
  5. Clearing a bonus? Use RTP to cut the cost. Expected cost is turnover × house edge, so a higher RTP directly lowers it. Our wagering guide shows the maths.
  6. For the lowest edge of all, switch to the tables: Banker in baccarat or basic-strategy blackjack.

FAQ

What is a good RTP for a slot?

96% or higher is good for a modern online slot. Most Pragmatic Play hits run at about 96.5% in their default version, and Big Bass Bonanza reaches 96.71%. Anything below 94% is worth avoiding when a higher version of the same game exists elsewhere.

Does RTP tell me how much I'll win today?

No. RTP is measured over millions of spins. In a 200-spin session you can finish far above or below it. Volatility tells you how wild those swings will be.

How do I check a slot's RTP?

Open the game, tap the menu or info (i) button and read the game rules or paytable. The theoretical RTP is printed there, usually near the bottom. Some casinos, like GOD55, also show it on the game tile.

Can a casino change a slot's RTP?

A casino can choose which certified RTP version of a game it offers, which is why the same slot can pay back differently at two sites. It can't adjust results spin by spin or by time of day.

What does RNG mean in a casino?

RNG stands for random number generator, the software that decides every slot spin and every card in an RNG table game. Licensed providers have their RNGs tested by independent labs such as GLI, iTech Labs, BMM Testlabs and eCOGRA.

Are live casino games RNG?

The core result isn't. Live games use real cards, wheels and dice in a studio. Some live titles add RNG features on top, such as the random multipliers in Lightning Baccarat and Lightning Roulette.

What does provably fair mean?

It's a way to verify crypto casino results yourself. The casino commits to a hidden server seed before you bet, you add your own client seed, and afterwards you can check that the revealed seeds produce exactly the result you got. Winna's 16 Originals work this way.
