What is RTP?
RTP stands for Return to Player. It’s the theoretical percentage of all money wagered that a game pays back over a very long period. A slot with a 96% RTP is expected to return RM96 for every RM100 wagered, measured across millions of spins by all players.
The remaining RM4 is the house edge, the casino’s advantage:
House edge = 100% − RTP
So a 96% RTP = a 4% house edge, a 98.94% RTP = a 1.06% house edge, and so on.
The most important thing to understand: RTP is a long-run average, not a promise for your session. In 200 spins you could walk away with double your money, or lose the lot. RTP only “comes true” when the number of spins is huge.
Worked example in RM
Say you play 1,000 spins at RM1 (RM1,000 wagered in total):
| RTP | Expected return | Expected loss |
|---|---|---|
| 96.71% (Big Bass Bonanza, default version) | RM967.10 | RM32.90 |
| 96.21% (Book of Dead, highest version) | RM962.10 | RM37.90 |
| 94.50% (the low version of many Pragmatic slots) | RM945.00 | RM55.00 |
| 84.18% (Book of Dead, lowest version) | RM841.80 | RM158.20 |
Same slot, same session, but the 84.18% version “eats” more than four times as much of your money as the 96.21% version. That’s why RTP isn’t just a technical number.
Short run vs long run
That RM37.90 expected loss is an average. If a thousand players each played 1,000 spins at RM1, a handful would win big, many would lose a few hundred ringgit, some would roughly break even, and the average of all of them would land close to the RTP. The more spins, the closer the real result gets to the RTP; the fewer spins, the bigger the role of luck.
That’s why two things can be true at the same time: your friend really did win RM3,000 on a 94.5% slot last week, and the 96.5% slot is still the better choice for you. One session proves nothing about a game’s maths.
RTP of popular slots: the real numbers
These figures come from our slot reviews. “Other versions” are the RTP configurations the provider also offers to casinos:
| Slot | Provider | Default RTP | Other versions | Volatility |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Big Bass Bonanza | Pragmatic Play | 96.71% | 95.67% / 94.62% | Medium-high |
| Sugar Rush 1000 | Pragmatic Play | 96.53% | 95.50% / 94.50% | High |
| Gates of Olympus 1000 | Pragmatic Play | 96.50% | 95.51% / 94.50% | High |
| Gates of Olympus | Pragmatic Play | 96.50% | As low as 94.50% | High |
| Sugar Rush | Pragmatic Play | 96.50% | 95.50% / 94.50% | High |
| Starlight Princess | Pragmatic Play | 96.50% | As low as 94.50% | High |
| Sweet Bonanza | Pragmatic Play | 96.48% | Check the paytable | High |
| Book of Dead | Play’n GO | 96.21% | 94.25% / 91.25% / 87.25% / 84.18% | High |
As a general guide for modern slots:
- 96% and above: good, the standard for well-known international slots.
- 94–96%: average; often a lower version of the same slot.
- Below 94%: find another game if you can.
RTP versions: same slot, different RTP
Many players don’t know this: providers let casinos choose the RTP version. Gates of Olympus 1000 can run at 96.50% at one casino and 94.50% at another. The graphics, sounds and features are exactly the same. Only the maths behind them is different.
For some slots, the gap is huge. Book of Dead has five versions, from 96.21% all the way down to 84.18%.
How to check the RTP on the info screen (step by step)
- Open the slot at your casino (real-money or demo mode, if available).
- Tap the menu icon (usually three lines, a settings cog or the letter “i”).
- Choose “Game Rules” or “Paytable”, then scroll right to the bottom.
- Look for a line like “The theoretical RTP of this game is 96.50%”. Some slots list separate RTPs for Ante Bet or Buy Feature.
- Compare it with the default RTP in the table above. If it’s lower, you’re playing the more expensive version.
- Repeat at another casino if you’re serious about that slot. Five minutes of checking can save you a lot of ringgit.
At GOD55, this job is easier because its slot lobby shows the RTP on every game tile. When we tested, Gates of Olympus 1000 showed 96.5% in their Pragmatic Play lobby. See our GOD55 review for more details.
Durian tip: For in-app titles like Mega888 or 918Kiss, or any slot that doesn’t show its RTP on the info screen, assume you don’t know the RTP. When you’re clearing turnover, pick slots whose RTP you can confirm.
Asian slots: JILI, Fa Chai, Mega888 and 918Kiss
Malaysian players spend a lot of time on slots from Asian studios, not just Pragmatic Play. The principle is the same: look for the RTP in the game rules, or in the lobby if the casino displays it. GOD55’s JILI lobby, for example, shows an RTP label on every game, so you can compare JILI titles one by one before you choose. Our reviews of JILI’s Super Ace and Fortune Gems list both at 97%.
For in-app slots like Mega888 and 918Kiss, check whether the info screen shows an RTP. If it doesn’t, you’re playing without knowing the real price of the game. Nothing wrong with having fun lah, but for serious sessions or for clearing turnover, it’s better to pick a slot with a clear RTP. Besides, Mega888 and 918Kiss are excluded from the main welcome bonuses at GOD55, MD88 and Maxim88 anyway.
RTP for Ante Bet, Buy Feature and jackpots
Some slots have more than one RTP figure in their game rules, depending on the betting mode:
- Ante Bet: on Sweet Bonanza and Gates of Olympus, Ante Bet adds 25% to your bet to double your chance of triggering free spins. It raises the cost of every spin, so redo your budget maths.
- Buy Feature: buying free spins outright usually costs 100x your bet on Pragmatic slots like Gates of Olympus 1000 and Sweet Bonanza. On a RM1 spin, one buy is RM100.
- Progressive jackpot slots: part of every bet goes into the jackpot pool, so the base game’s return is usually lower than a regular slot’s.
The game rules will state the RTP for each mode if it differs. Read that line before you press the buy button.
Why the RTP version matters for bonuses
When you’re clearing turnover, every 1% of RTP makes a big difference. Take UWIN33’s slots bonus with RM3,000 of turnover:
| RTP version | House edge | Expected cost on RM3,000 |
|---|---|---|
| 96.50% | 3.50% | RM105 |
| 95.50% | 4.50% | RM135 |
| 94.50% | 5.50% | RM165 |
A RM60 difference just because of the slot version, not small ah. On big bonuses with RM12,000 or more of turnover, the gap runs into hundreds of ringgit. Read our turnover guide for the full maths.
RTP of table games and live casino
Table games often give a higher RTP than slots, especially if you pick the right bet:
| Game / bet | RTP | House edge |
|---|---|---|
| Baccarat: Banker | 98.94% | 1.06% |
| Baccarat: Player | 98.76% | 1.24% |
| Baccarat: Tie (pays 8:1) | 85.64% | 14.36% |
| Blackjack (basic strategy) | ~99.5% | ~0.5% |
| European roulette (single zero) | 97.30% | 2.70% |
| American roulette (double zero) | 94.74% | 5.26% |
| Sic Bo: Big / Small | 97.22% | 2.78% |
| Dragon Tiger: Dragon / Tiger | ~96.27% | ~3.73% |
Two lessons from this table:
- Bets in the same game can be very different. Banker in baccarat is only 1.06%, but Tie at 8:1 is 14.36%. In ringgit, a RM100 Tie bet has an expected cost of RM14.36 per round, against RM1.06 on Banker, more than 13 times as much. See our baccarat guide.
- Skill can change the RTP. Blackjack only reaches ~99.5% if you follow basic strategy. Play by gut feel and the house edge goes up noticeably. The full charts are in our blackjack guide.
Live game shows are usually lower. Evolution lists a maximum RTP of 96.08% for Crazy Time, 96.23% for Monopoly Live and 95.40% for Mega Ball, and the real figure depends on the bet you choose.
RTP, hit frequency and volatility: three different numbers
Many players mix up these three concepts. Each one answers a different question:
| Number | The question it answers | Example |
|---|---|---|
| RTP | How much comes back on average? | Sugar Rush 1000: 96.53% |
| Hit frequency | How often does a spin pay anything? | Sugar Rush 1000: ~34.48% (about 1 in 3 spins) |
| Volatility | How are the wins spread out? | Gates of Olympus 1000: high, 15,000x max win |
Two slots with almost the same RTP can feel completely different. Big Bass Bonanza has a default RTP of 96.71%, but its base-game hit rate is only about 13%, so most spins pay nothing. Sugar Rush 1000 pays a win roughly once every three spins, but most of those wins are small, and the big money comes from free spins.
A high hit frequency doesn’t mean a slot is “easier to win”. It just means small wins come more often. To get the full picture, read our slot volatility guide.
What is an RNG and how is it tested?
RNG stands for Random Number Generator. In every slot and digital table game, the RNG generates numbers continuously, thousands of times a second, even when nobody is playing.
The moment you press spin, the number at that millisecond decides the result. The spinning reels, the sound effects and the suspense after that are just presentation. The outcome is already decided the instant you press the button.
Three things to know about an RNG:
- No memory. The previous spin doesn’t affect the next one.
- No awareness of you. The RNG doesn’t know whether you just deposited, are on a winning streak, or have lost 50 spins in a row.
- Statistically tested. Independent labs run millions of rounds to make sure results are truly random and the RTP matches what’s stated.
The testing labs to know
| Lab | What it does |
|---|---|
| eCOGRA | Tests RNGs and audits payouts; known for its “Safe and Fair” seal |
| GLI (Gaming Laboratories International) | Tests and certifies games and systems for many regulators |
| iTech Labs | Tests RNG and RTP for online games |
| BMM Testlabs | One of the oldest gaming test labs, testing software and hardware |
Big providers like Pragmatic Play, Play’n GO and Evolution send their games for testing before launch. At the casino level, Maxim88’s footer shows BMM Testlabs, iTech Labs and GLI badges. See the details in our Maxim88 review.
Provably fair: for crypto and crash games
Crypto casinos and crash games often use a provably fair system. Here’s how it works:
- Before the round, the server gives you a hash of its secret seed.
- You (or your browser) contribute a player seed.
- The result is calculated from the server seed, the player seed and the round number combined.
- After the round, the server seed is revealed, and you can check that its hash matches and the result wasn’t changed.
In Malaysia, the most common place you’ll meet this system is Aviator from Spribe, which you’ll find at GOD55 and UWIN33 under fast games or crash games.
7 slot myths you should drop
1. “This slot hasn’t paid for ages, confirm it’s going to pay soon.” No. The RNG has no memory. A slot that hasn’t paid for 300 spins has the same chance on spin 301 as on spin one.
2. “This machine is hot, keep playing.” Winning streaks do happen, but they don’t predict the next spin. “Hot” and “cold” are just our brains looking for patterns in random results.
3. “Jam ong: playing at 3am is easier to win.” The RNG doesn’t know what time it is. Your chances at 3am are the same as at 3pm.
4. “Casinos tighten the slots at night or on weekends.” The RTP version is set in the game’s configuration, not switched according to traffic. A lab-tested RNG has no “night mode”.
5. “Switching from auto spin to manual (or turbo) changes your luck.” How fast or how you press spin doesn’t change the maths. It only changes how quickly you bet, and playing faster means your money moves faster.
6. “New accounts get to win first as bait.” A tested RNG doesn’t tell new players from old ones. The early wins you hear about from friends are ordinary luck, not “bait”.
7. “Check today’s live RTP on Telegram before you play.” Lots of Telegram groups, TikTok accounts and websites post “live RTP” or “RTP hari ini” lists that supposedly show which slots are “gacor”, with percentages that change every hour. Those numbers aren’t official data from the providers. A slot’s theoretical RTP doesn’t change every day; only the short-term random results do. Often, these “live RTP” lists are just a way to pull you towards a sign-up link. The only RTP you can trust is the one written in the game rules themselves.
Durian tip: The only “strategy” that really changes your odds on slots is picking a higher RTP version and a bet size that suits your bankroll. Everything else is entertainment.
How to use RTP to choose slots and bonuses
Put everything above together into a simple routine:
- List your favourite slots and check their default RTP in our table.
- Confirm the version at your casino through the info screen. Pick the casino running the highest version.
- Choose 96% and above for clearing bonus turnover.
- Match volatility to your bankroll: low or medium for turnover, high for chasing big wins.
- Add rebates. A 1% rebate effectively lowers the house edge. On a 96.5% slot, a 1% rebate brings your net cost down from 3.5% to roughly 2.5% of turnover.
- Set session limits in RM, not in number of spins.
An example of step 5: RM5,000 of turnover on a 96.5% slot has an expected cost of RM175. With a 1% rebate (RM50), the net cost drops to about RM125. That’s why no-turnover rebates like those at Maxim88 and DK88 are so useful for regular slot players. Remember, GOD55’s rebate pauses while a bonus is active.
