How to Play Blackjack: Rules, Basic Strategy Charts & Odds (2026)

How to play blackjack for beginners: card values, hit, stand, double and split, full basic strategy charts, why to skip 6:5 and insurance, and live blackjack.

CasinoDurian· Updated 2 Oct 2026· 14 min read

In short: Blackjack is the only major casino game where the house edge changes with your decisions. Follow a basic strategy chart and the house edge drops to around 0.5%; play by gut feel and it climbs noticeably. This guide explains the rules, the full charts for hard, soft and pair hands, the rule variants to avoid, and where to play live blackjack in Malaysia.

Key takeaways

  • ✓With basic strategy, blackjack's house edge is around 0.5%, one of the lowest in the casino.
  • ✓Avoid tables that pay blackjack at 6:5; it adds about 1.4% to the house edge.
  • ✓Always split A,A and 8,8; never split 10,10 or 5,5.
  • ✓Insurance is a bad bet, with a house edge of about 7.5% in an 8-deck shoe.
  • ✓Side bets like Perfect Pairs and 21+3 carry house edges many times higher than the main bet.
  • ✓Card counting is close to useless online because of 8-deck shoes and frequent shuffles.

The goal and card values

In blackjack, you play against the dealer, not against the other players at the table. The goal: get a total higher than the dealer’s without going over 21. If you go over 21, you bust and lose right away, even if the dealer busts later.

Card Value
2 to 10 Face value
J, Q, K 10
Ace (A) 1 or 11, whichever is better for your hand

A blackjack (or “natural”) is an Ace plus a 10-value card as your first two cards. It pays 3:2 at a good table: a RM100 bet wins RM150.

Hard hands and soft hands

  • A soft hand is a hand with an Ace counted as 11, for example A,6 = soft 17. You can’t bust by taking one more card, because the Ace can switch to 1.
  • A hard hand is a hand with no Ace, or with an Ace that has to count as 1. For example, 10,6 = hard 16.

It matters because soft 17 and hard 17 are played very differently.

How one round flows

  1. Place your bet before the timer runs out.
  2. The dealer deals: two face-up cards for you, one face-up card (the up-card) for the dealer.
  3. Check for blackjack. If you have blackjack, you’re paid 3:2 (unless the dealer also has blackjack, which is a push).
  4. Make your decision: hit, stand, double, split or surrender, based on your cards and the dealer’s up-card.
  5. The dealer plays by fixed rules: draw cards until reaching 17 or more.
  6. Payouts: a win pays 1:1, blackjack 3:2, and on a tie (push) your bet is returned.

Your options at the table

Option What it means When it’s useful
Hit Take another card Low totals, or when the dealer shows a strong card (7–A)
Stand Stop at your current total 17+, or 12–16 when the dealer is weak
Double down Double your bet, take exactly one card 9, 10 or 11 against the right dealer cards
Split Split a pair into two hands, with a second bet of the same size Always A,A and 8,8; other pairs depend on the dealer
Surrender Give up the hand and get half your bet back 16 against 9, 10, A; 15 against 10
Insurance A side bet when the dealer shows an Ace Almost never (see below)

Rule variants that change the house edge

Not all blackjack tables are the same. A few small rules change the house edge a lot:

Rule Better for you Rough effect
Blackjack payout 3:2 (not 6:5) 6:5 adds ~1.4% to the house edge
Dealer and soft 17 Dealer stands on soft 17 (S17) H17 adds ~0.2%
Number of decks Fewer decks A small effect, but fewer is better
Double after split (DAS) Allowed A small effect in your favour
Late surrender Allowed A small effect in your favour

Example: why 6:5 is so expensive

You bet RM100 a hand. Blackjack comes up in about 4.75% of hands, or roughly once every 21 hands.

  • 3:2 table: blackjack pays RM150.
  • 6:5 table: blackjack pays RM120.
  • The RM30 difference × 4.75% = RM1.43 per hand, about 1.4% of your bet.

Over a 100-hand session at RM100, that’s around RM143 of extra cost, just because of one payout rule. If the table says “Blackjack pays 6 to 5”, find another table lah.

How to check the rules of a live table

Every live table has a rules panel behind an “i” icon or “Help” menu. Before your first bet, check:

  1. “Blackjack pays 3 to 2”, not 6 to 5.
  2. “Dealer stands on soft 17” (S17) or “Dealer must hit soft 17” (H17).
  3. The number of decks and whether double after split is allowed.
  4. Whether surrender is available.

The panel often lists the table’s RTP too; our RTP and RNG guide explains what it means.

Durian tip: Not sure about a table’s rules? Ask the casino’s live chat before you play. Five seconds of checking is cheaper than a hundred hands at a 6:5 table.

Basic strategy charts

The charts below are for multi-deck blackjack where the dealer stands on soft 17 and double after split is allowed. That’s the usual setup at good live tables.

Key: H = hit, S = stand, D = double (if you can’t double, hit), Ds = double (if you can’t double, stand), P = split.

4,4 H H H P P H H H H H
3,3 P P P P P P H H H H
2,2 P P P P P P H H H H

Play 5,5 as a hard 10, so don’t split it.

Late surrender (if allowed)

  • Hard 16 against a dealer 9, 10 or A: surrender.
  • Hard 15 against a dealer 10: surrender.
  • If the table doesn’t offer surrender, follow the hard totals chart (hit).

How to read the charts quickly

  1. Check whether your hand is a pair. If yes, use the pairs chart.
  2. If it’s not a pair, check whether your hand has an Ace counted as 11. If yes, use the soft chart.
  3. If not, use the hard chart.
  4. Find the column that matches the dealer’s up-card and follow the code.

Durian tip: Save a screenshot of these charts on your phone and keep it open next to the live table. Nobody will know, and it’s completely allowed. After 200–300 hands, most decisions become automatic.

Why the charts make sense

The logic centres on the dealer’s weak cards (2–6) and strong cards (7–A). Against a 4, 5 or 6, the dealer is more likely to bust, so you stand on 12–16 and let them take the risk. Against 7 or higher, the dealer likely finishes on 17–21, so standing on 16 almost surely loses and hitting is the less bad option.

Four example hands, following the charts

Your hand Dealer shows Chart decision Why
10,6 (hard 16) 10 Surrender if allowed, otherwise hit 16 rarely beats a 10; half your bet is better than losing nearly all of it
A,7 (soft 18) 9 Hit 18 often loses to a 9, and a soft hand can’t bust with one card
9,9 7 Stand The dealer likely has 17, and your 18 already beats it
6,5 (hard 11) 6 Double Your best chance of a 10-value card, and a dealer 6 is weak

In the last example, a RM50 bet becomes RM100 after doubling. If you win, you make RM100, not RM50. That’s why doubling in the right spots is blackjack’s main source of profit.

Budget and cost per hour

Blackjack needs a slightly bigger bankroll than baccarat because of doubles and splits. A RM20 hand can turn into RM80 if you split and then double both hands. A rough guide: bring enough for at least 30–50 base bets per session, for example RM300–RM500 for RM10 bets.

The expected cost is easy to work out. Say RM50 a hand and 60 hands an hour (an estimate for a live table):

How you play Rough house edge Expected cost per hour
Basic strategy, 3:2 table ~0.5% RM3,000 × 0.5% = RM15
Basic strategy, 6:5 table ~1.9% RM3,000 × 1.9% = RM57
Gut feel, 3:2 table 2% or more RM60 and up

Basic strategy at a 3:2 table makes blackjack some of the cheapest entertainment in the casino.

Insurance, side bets and live blackjack

Why insurance is a bad bet

When the dealer shows an Ace, you’ll be offered insurance: a side bet of up to half your main bet that pays 2:1 if the dealer has blackjack.

Here’s the maths in an 8-deck shoe: there are 128 ten-value cards among the 415 cards left (after the dealer’s Ace), so the dealer has blackjack only about 30.8% of the time.

  • RM50 insurance, win: +RM100 (a 30.8% chance).
  • RM50 insurance, lose: −RM50 (a 69.2% chance).
  • Expected value: (0.3084 × RM100) − (0.6916 × RM50) = RM30.84 − RM34.58 = −RM3.74, a house edge of about 7.5%.

“Even money” on your own blackjack against a dealer Ace is insurance under another name, so say no to that too.

Live blackjack variants

Most of the blackjack Malaysian players play today is live, from studios like Evolution, Pragmatic Play Live, Ezugi and Playtech. Popular variants:

  • Infinite Blackjack (Evolution): no player limit. Everyone starts with the same cards, but each person makes their own decisions. Good if regular tables are always full.
  • Free Bet Blackjack (Evolution): free doubles on hard 9, 10 or 11, and free splits on all pairs except 10-value cards. In exchange, if the dealer busts with exactly 22, every hand still in play is a push.
  • Lightning Blackjack (Evolution): an extra fee on each hand for a chance at a multiplier on the next round.
  • Power Blackjack (Evolution): all the 9s and 10s are removed from the 8-deck shoe (J, Q and K stay), and you can double, triple or quadruple. The basic strategy charts above don’t fit this game.

Side bets: fun, but expensive

Side bet Top payouts House edge (Evolution paytable)
Perfect Pairs Suited pair 25:1, coloured pair 12:1, mixed pair 6:1 ~4.1%
21+3 Suited trips 100:1, straight flush 40:1, three of a kind 30:1, straight 10:1, flush 5:1 ~3.7%

Compare that with ~0.5% on the main bet. In expected loss, a RM10 side bet costs about as much as an RM80 main bet.

Counting cards online

Forget it lah. RNG blackjack reshuffles every hand, and live tables usually use 8 decks that are reshuffled long before the shoe runs out, so counting gains you close to nothing.

7 common blackjack mistakes

  1. Standing on 12–16 against a dealer 7 or higher because you’re scared of busting.
  2. Not doubling on 11 against a dealer 2 to 10.
  3. Splitting 10,10 because “two hands of 20 confirm better”. One 20 is already very strong.
  4. Not splitting 8,8 against 9, 10 or A. Hard 16 is the worst hand in the game.
  5. Taking insurance or even money.
  6. Playing at a 6:5 table without realising it.
  7. Raising your bet after a loss to “chase back”.

Bonuses and blackjack

Blackjack is the game least often counted towards bonus turnover. The main welcome bonuses at our Malaysian casinos count on slots, and many T&Cs either don’t count blackjack at all or count only a small share. If you play with a slots bonus active, your blackjack winnings might be cancelled.

For regular blackjack players, a no-turnover rebate often beats a bonus. On RM3,000 of turnover an hour, a 0.5% rebate gives back RM15, about your whole expected cost at a 0.5% house edge. Check that the rebate covers live blackjack, as rates often differ by game.

Step by step: your first live blackjack session

  1. Pick a casino with Evolution tables, such as Maxim88 (its Evo Club includes Free Bet Blackjack) or DK88.
  2. Deposit via Touch ’n Go or DuitNow.
  3. Pick a 3:2 table with a suitable minimum. For a RM300 budget, RM10 bets give you room for around 30 bad hands in a row.
  4. Open the basic strategy charts next to the table.
  5. Follow the chart on every hand, even when it feels wrong (like hitting 16 against a 10).
  6. Say no to insurance and side bets.
  7. Stop when you reach the win or loss limit you set.

FAQ

How do beginners play blackjack?

Place your bet, receive two cards, then choose to hit (take a card), stand (stop), double (double your bet for one more card) or split (break up a pair). The goal is to beat the dealer's total without going over 21.

What is blackjack basic strategy?

A chart that shows the mathematically best decision for every combination of your cards and the dealer's up-card. It doesn't guarantee a win, but it brings the house edge down to around 0.5% at a table with good rules.

Should I take insurance when the dealer shows an Ace?

No. Insurance pays 2:1, but the dealer only has blackjack about 31% of the time in an 8-deck shoe. That gives it a house edge of about 7.5%, far worse than the main bet.

What's the difference between 3:2 and 6:5 blackjack?

At a 3:2 table, a RM100 blackjack pays RM150. At a 6:5 table, only RM120. Because blackjack comes up roughly once every 21 hands, that difference adds about 1.4% to the house edge.

When should I double down?

On hard 11 against a dealer 2 to 10, hard 10 against 2 to 9, and hard 9 against 3 to 6. Soft hands like A,6 also double against 3 to 6.

Can I count cards in online blackjack?

It's close to useless. RNG blackjack reshuffles every hand, and live tables usually use 8 decks that are reshuffled long before the shoe runs out.

Can casino bonuses be used for blackjack?

Rarely. Most slots welcome bonuses don't count blackjack. Pick a live casino bonus or a promo like Maxim88's Blackjack Unbeatable 5, which refunds 100% of your bet up to RM2,888 if you lose holding five cards.
