The goal and card values
Blackjack is ikaw laban sa dealer. Not against the other players at the table, just the dealer. You both start with two cards, and you can see one of the dealer’s cards (the up-card). The goal: finish closer to 21 than the dealer without going over. Go over 21 and you bust, which is an automatic loss, even if the dealer busts later.
| Card | Value |
|---|---|
| 2 to 10 | Face value |
| Jack, Queen, King | 10 |
| Ace | 1 or 11, whichever helps your hand |
A hand with an Ace counted as 11 is called soft (A,6 is “soft 17”), because it can’t bust with one more card. A hand without a usable Ace is hard (10,7 is “hard 17”).
An Ace plus a 10-value card on your first two cards is a blackjack. It pays 3:2 on a good table: bet ₱1,000, win ₱1,500.
How a round works (step by step)
- Place your bet before the timer ends.
- The deal. You get two cards face-up; the dealer gets one face-up and one face-down (or a second card dealt later, depending on the table).
- Insurance offer. If the dealer shows an Ace, you’ll be offered insurance (skip it, more on that below). Depending on the table, the dealer checks for blackjack now or after everyone acts.
- Your decisions. Hit, stand, double, split or surrender, following the chart.
- The dealer plays. The dealer has no choices: they draw until reaching 17 or more.
- Settle. Higher total wins. Same total is a push and your bet comes back.
Your actions
| Action | What it does | When it’s usually right |
|---|---|---|
| Hit | Take another card | Low totals, or 12–16 against a strong dealer card (7–A) |
| Stand | Keep your total | 17+, or 12–16 against a weak dealer card (2–6) |
| Double down | Double your bet, take exactly one more card | 9, 10, 11 and some soft hands when the dealer is weak |
| Split | Turn a pair into two hands, each with its own bet | Always with A,A and 8,8; never with 10,10 |
| Surrender | Give up half your bet and end the hand | Hard 16 vs 9/10/A, hard 15 vs 10 (if offered) |
| Insurance | Side bet that the dealer has blackjack | Never |
Rule variants that change the odds
Not all blackjack tables are equal. Small rule changes move the house edge, and you can see most of them printed on the table or in the rules screen.
| Rule | Better for you | Worse for you | Approx. effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blackjack payout | 3:2 | 6:5 | 6:5 adds ≈1.4% |
| Dealer on soft 17 | Stands (S17) | Hits (H17) | H17 adds ≈0.2% |
| Double after split | Allowed (DAS) | Not allowed | No DAS adds ≈0.14% |
| Surrender | Late surrender offered | Not offered | Surrender saves ≈0.08% |
| Number of decks | Fewer | More (8 is standard live) | Single deck vs 8 decks ≈0.5% |
Worked example: 3:2 vs 6:5
You bet ₱1,000 a hand for 100 hands, so ₱100,000 wagered. You’ll get a blackjack roughly 4.75% of the time, so around 4.75 blackjacks per 100 hands.
- At 3:2, each pays ₱1,500.
- At 6:5, each pays ₱1,200, so you lose ₱300 per blackjack.
- 4.75 × ₱300 = ₱1,425 less per ₱100,000 wagered, which is about 1.4%.
That’s almost three times the whole house edge of a good game. If you see “Blackjack pays 6 to 5”, lipat ka na ng table.
Basic strategy charts
These charts are for the most common online setup: multiple decks, dealer stands on soft 17, double after split allowed. Find your hand on the left, the dealer’s up-card across the top.
Key: S = stand · H = hit · D = double (if not allowed, hit) · Ds = double (if not allowed, stand) · P = split

5,5 is never split. Play it as a hard 10.
Late surrender
If the table offers late surrender, use it in exactly these spots (otherwise follow the hard totals chart):
| Your hand | Surrender against |
|---|---|
| Hard 16 | Dealer 9, 10 or A |
| Hard 15 | Dealer 10 |
Durian tip: Screenshot these charts and keep them open on your phone while you play. Online, no one minds if you check. Even pros use the chart; memory is what slips when the cards run cold.
Worked examples: reading the chart
You have 12, dealer shows 3. Feels like you should stand kasi baka mag-bust ka. The chart says hit. Against a 3 the dealer busts less often than against a 4–6, and your 12 loses to any dealer 17+.
You have A,7 (soft 18), dealer shows 6. Most players stand on 18. The chart says double (Ds). The dealer’s 6 is the weakest up-card, and a soft hand can’t bust on one card. Against a 9, though, A,7 is a hit, because 18 is often not enough.
You have 16, dealer shows 10. The worst hand in blackjack. With late surrender, surrender and keep half your bet. Without it, hit. Standing on 16 against a 10 loses more often.
You have 9,9, dealer shows 7. Stand. Your 18 beats the dealer’s most likely total of 17. Against an 8 or 9, split instead.
You have 11, dealer shows 6, bet ₱500. Double. You put in another ₱500, take one card, and if you win you collect ₱1,000 profit instead of ₱500. This is the most profitable spot in the game, so don’t be shy with it.
House edge, insurance and the cost of mistakes
With perfect basic strategy on a good table, blackjack’s house edge is about 0.5%, an RTP around 99.5%. That’s better than baccarat’s Banker bet (1.06%) and far better than any slot.
But that 0.5% only exists if you play the chart. Here’s what common habits do to it:
| Habit | Approx. house edge |
|---|---|
| Perfect basic strategy, good rules | ≈0.5% |
| Basic strategy on a 6:5 table | ≈1.9% |
| Playing by gut feel (“kutob”) | 2% or more |
| Taking insurance every time | Adds a separate ≈7% bet |
Why insurance is a trap
When the dealer shows an Ace, you’re offered insurance: a side bet of up to half your stake that pays 2:1 if the dealer has blackjack.
To break even, the dealer would need blackjack one time in three (33.3%). In an 8-deck game, the hole card is a 10-value card only about 31% of the time.
Worked example: you take ₱500 insurance on a ₱1,000 bet, 100 times.
- About 31 times the dealer has blackjack: you win ₱1,000 each = +₱31,000.
- About 69 times they don’t: you lose ₱500 each = −₱34,500.
- Net: −₱3,500 on ₱50,000 of insurance bets, a house edge of about 7%.
“Even money” on your own blackjack is the same bet in disguise. Skip both.
Worked example: what a session really costs
You bring ₱5,000 and bet ₱100 a hand for 100 hands. With doubles and splits, you’ll actually put a bit more than ₱10,000 into action, so call it about ₱11,000 wagered.
- Basic strategy, 3:2 table: ₱11,000 × 0.5% ≈ ₱55 average cost.
- Basic strategy, 6:5 table: ₱11,000 × 1.9% ≈ ₱209.
- Gut-feel play: ₱11,000 × 2% or more ≈ ₱220+.
- Gut-feel on a 6:5 table, plus insurance: easily ₱400+.
Same budget, same 100 hands. The chart and a good table cut your average cost by three-quarters. That’s what “sulit” looks like in blackjack.
Live blackjack variants, side bets and card counting
Most online blackjack in Southeast Asia is live, streamed from studios with real dealers. Same basic rules, but some versions add twists:
| Variant | How it works | Strategy note |
|---|---|---|
| Classic live blackjack | 7 seats, 8 decks | Use the charts above |
| Infinite Blackjack (Evolution) | Unlimited players share the same starting cards, each decides independently | No waiting for a seat |
| Free Bet Blackjack (Evolution) | Free doubles on hard 9, 10, 11; free splits on pairs except 10s; dealer 22 pushes | The chart changes; follow the game’s own guide |
| Lightning Blackjack (Evolution) | Random multipliers boost future wins, for an extra Lightning fee per bet | More volatile, read the paytable |
| Power Blackjack (Evolution) | 9s and 10s removed (picture cards stay); double, triple or quadruple down | Standard charts don’t apply |
Side bets: fun, but expensive
Many tables offer side bets like Perfect Pairs (your first two cards form a pair) and 21+3 (your two cards plus the dealer’s up-card make a poker hand). The payouts look big, up to 25:1 or more, but their house edges typically run several percent. That’s many times the 0.5% of the main game. If you play them, keep them small and occasional.
Does card counting work online?
Mostly no. Live tables use 8 decks and reshuffle long before the end of the shoe, and RNG blackjack usually shuffles every hand. The count rarely gets high enough to matter. Your edge online comes from the chart, from good rules (3:2, S17) and from rakeback or rebates, not from counting.
Blackjack terms you’ll see
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Up-card | The dealer’s face-up card, the one the chart is based on |
| Hole card | The dealer’s face-down card |
| Soft hand | A hand with an Ace counted as 11 (A,6 = soft 17) |
| Hard hand | A hand with no Ace, or an Ace that must count as 1 |
| Bust | Going over 21; an automatic loss |
| Push | A tie with the dealer; your bet is returned |
| S17 / H17 | Dealer stands / hits on soft 17 |
| DAS | Double after split allowed |
| Shoe | The box holding the shuffled decks (usually 8 live) |
Common mistakes Pinoy players make
- Taking insurance “para safe”. It’s the opposite of safe.
- Standing on 12–16 against a 7 or higher kasi takot mag-bust. The dealer will usually make 17+.
- Not splitting 8s against a 10. 16 is the worst hand; two hands starting with 8 are better.
- Splitting 10s. You’re breaking up a 20. Huwag.
- Never doubling soft hands. A,6 and A,7 against a 3–6 are money spots.
- Playing 6:5 tables because the minimum bet looks friendlier.
- Changing strategy when losing. The chart doesn’t change because of a bad streak. Kapit lang.
- Chasing losses with bigger bets. “Bawi sa susunod” is how a ₱3,000 session becomes ₱15,000.
Blackjack bonuses and where to play
Blackjack and bonuses don’t mix well. Because the house edge is so low, many casinos count blackjack at only 0–10% toward wagering, or exclude it entirely. Our wagering guide shows how quickly that turns a bonus into a grind.
For blackjack players, a casino that pays you back on every bet usually beats a big welcome bonus.
Where to play blackjack in the Philippines
We review four casinos for Pinoy players. For blackjack, start with these two:
- BK8: a peso account, a Tagalog site and a live lobby with Free Bet Blackjack, Infinite Blackjack, Lightning Blackjack, Speed Blackjack and BK8 One BlackJack. Its instant rebate pays on every bet with no turnover and no cap, so blackjack’s low bonus contribution doesn’t matter. Withdrawals are processed within 25 minutes, per its FAQ.
- BC.Game: 700+ live tables, including BC.Game-branded blackjack tables like Blackjack Freebet and Speed Blackjack, on a peso wallet.
Megapari adds VIP blackjack tables to a live lobby run by Evolution, Ezugi, Pragmatic Play Live and SA Gaming. Winna suits crypto players: Infinite Bet Stacker Blackjack, Easy Blackjack and Live Grand Playboy Blackjack in a 79-table lobby, a provably fair Blackjack in its Originals (check its rules panel for the payout and dealer rules) and instant rakeback from your first bet. BK8 and Winna are both on our fast payout list.
To fund: BK8’s payment guide and BC.Game’s homepage list GCash, Maya and QR Ph. Since the BSP’s August 2025 delink, wallet money goes in via QR Ph or bank transfer, so check the cashier after you log in. Or buy USDT in GCrypto and send it to any of the four; see our GCash casino page.
